But will they be enough to make the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ a success? Let's find out in our review of the device.
Redmi Note 12 Pro+: Design
To be perfectly honest, the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ tries to impress the least in the design department. With the phone, Xiaomi didn't try to make the phone look fancier or more interesting. However, what it has definitely achieved is to launch a phone with a highly functional design, packed with elements that longtime fans of the series will appreciate.
Its rather bulky design also gives the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ the feel of a well-made device that also feels secure in the hand. In addition, we have tactile buttons, a glass surface on the back and, interestingly, a 3.5mm jack on the top of the device to make it more attractive to buyers. During our phone calls, we were happy to see that the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ is also impressive in terms of performance. Powered by the MediaTek 1080 SoC, the phone offers more than enough power for whatever you throw at it. While the chipset isn't the fastest out there, it's fast enough for what a mid-range phone like the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ should offer.
Games like Call of Duty Mobile and Asphalt 9 Legends ran flawlessly on the phone, and everyday apps ran smoothly on the device's fast 120Hz refresh rate panel. The same applied to benchmarks, where popular ones like Geekbench, AnTuTu and PC Mark Work 3 ran smoothly on the device. Let me give you an idea of the performance by giving you some numbers.
Then we saw on AnTuTu that the phone does well with a score of 457,561, while Geekbench scores 753 in the single-core test and 1,985 in the multi-core test. In Job 3 we saw a score of 11292 points accumulated. We can add up all the impressive results.
But one benchmark where this new dual-core 2.6GHz Cortex-A78 performance chipset really shines is in the CPU throttling test. In this test, the phone functioned normally and maintained a sustained peak performance, which is always a good sign when judging the phone's longevity.
Battery performance is also an area where we see positive impacts from the MediaTek 1080 SoC, as this chipset generally performs well and therefore doesn't consume much battery life. This is coupled with the fact that the phone packs a massive 5,000mAh battery that will easily get the phone through a day and then some on a single charge.
And when you finally run out of power, you can use the included 120W fast charger to charge the battery to the brim in almost 22 minutes. Pretty good for a phone the size of a big battery.
Redmi Note 12 Pro+: Camera
Things get a little (more) interesting in the camera department. That's because the phone packs a massive 200-megapixel Samsung ISOCELL HPX main camera sensor, which we found during our test is quite capable as a lens. This is coupled with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2-megapixel macro sensor. It's no secret that the first of these lenses is the most interesting, capturing some really detailed photos in both good and low light.
When fed the right light, the resulting photos come out with good dynamic range and vibrant colors. And when the light is low, the 1/1.4-inch sensor kicks in and starts capturing enough outside light and detail to ensure images don't look dark or noisy from processing. However, without night mode. With this mode enabled, the resulting photos end up looking over processed and a bit too soft as a result. They also look a bit artificially lit, which honestly never looks good for a picture.
The ultra wide-angle lens does a good job too, but its limitations start to appear once you've taken a few shots with it. During our time with it, we've found that ultra-wide images from this lens have some barreling around the edges. Also interesting is that images captured with this lens also had a slightly warmer tone compared to images captured with the main lens.
Macro lens performance is acceptable, but only in well-lit environments. In low light, its performance is understandable. In addition, we also have a 16-megapixel lens that does its job well again. The lens mostly captures accurate skin tones, and Xiaomi also manages to keep the problem of excessive processing of skin detail at bay.
Redmi Note 12 Pro+: the verdict
The Redmi Note 12 Pro+ is a very good upgrade if you are using a previous generation device from Xiaomi's Note series. When that's the case, you get a familiar experience that feels a lot more refined and is also vastly improved in some areas, like the camera department.
Even if you don't intend to upgrade from a Redmi Note device and your budget is around Rs 30,000, know that the Note 12 Pro+ still makes a lot of sense for you. For the price, it's a well-rounded phone that offers everything and more you'd want from your next mid-range smartphone. The only thing holding the device back is its design, which honestly doesn't do much to favor the Note 12 Pro+ over some of its priced rivals.
But again, design is a very subjective matter, and my opinion on the Note 12 Pro+'s design is my own. So if you like everything else about the phone, I recommend that you go to the nearest Xiaomi store to see the design in person and then make the purchase because, honestly, this is a very nice phone that grabs your attention earned.
